FORMER President Thabo Mbeki has refused to divulge the identity of the political party he voted for.
“The vote is a secret ballot. So don’t ask me who I voted for,” Mbeki told inquisitive journalists after he cast his vote in Holly Family College, Parktown, Johannesburg.
Mbeki’s political loyalty has been a subject of controversy since he was axed by the ANC last year and some of his loyalists reacted by forming the breakaway, Congress of the People (Cope). Cope is contesting the elections.
After casting the ballot, he said: “It was good for the country to hold elections because the citizens will determine the country’s future.
“People are voting for the future of our country and that [future] depends on people voting in part according to their conscience. People must vote for South Africa that they fought for, to bring unity.”
