About the Congress of the People

Information as of April 2009

The major catalyst for the party’s formation in 2008 was the forced resignation of former president Thabo Mbeki. Members of Mbeki’s cabinet handed in their resignations as a pledge of solidarity to the ousted president including then vice-president, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and other senior cabinet ministers. Since Cope was formed, an increasing number of ANC members and supporters have joined it.
Cope's vision for South Africa is for  "a democratic, inclusive, prosperous country which shuns all racial, ethnic, gender, narrow chauvinistic stereotypes and prejudices in favour of a caring society, where shared national identity and pride are deeply rooted; and where the freedoms of the people are untrammelled by a selfish political leadership; and where as a country we are at peace with our neighbours and the world"
